“It is easier to build strong children than fix broken men.” Frederick Douglass. In Rochester, New York, the Freedom Scholars Learning Center has been in existence since 2007. This amazing non-profit has been serving children and teenage scholars along with their families, so they “can engage in a variety of learning that recognizes their strengths, their culture, their struggles, and their capacity to thrive and make a difference.” I had the honor to interview Jeremy Smith, Executive Director of Freedom Scholars Learning Center.

Freedom Scholars is a grassroots community based organization. All scholars and their families are embraced and received with love. Harambee which means “let’s pull together” guides the thorough and purposeful programs at Freedom Scholars. Leadership, professionalism, being culturally responsive combined with pedagogy is how all staff interact with each other, scholars, and their families. There is ongoing communication and involvement with parents and guardians as they are valued for their contributions and connections to their children and the community.

Freedom Scholars Learning Center currently has four programs. Two days a week there is an Afterschool Program that utilizes the “Integrated Reading Curriculum” to provide literacy enrichment designed to engage the scholars in ELS. Jeremy shared the activities are rich in gaining, and sustaining, the attention of scholars that even if Beyoncè and Jay-Z walked into the room the scholars would not notice. Books are unapologetically from Black authors about Black Lives. Since many of the children have experienced trauma there is sensitivity so no one is re-traumatized as Freedom Scholars walk with children through their trauma. Family to Family Workshops came about during COVID and have continued. Parents and guardians wanted to be involved to share their talents and share the importance of dreaming. The voices and talents of parents now shine in learning about gardening, hair care, nutrition, fitness, economics strategies and more. A monthly family dinner is a place to break bread and be together. There is no agenda, only community and connection. The Summer Program runs daily for a five week literacy enrichment summer program. Reading and literacy along with fun activities, family engagement and nutritious snacks and lunch are part of this program. All programs are research based. Servant leaders (teachers), certified staff and mentored junior staff are essential to building connections and guiding scholars as they learn. Jeremy has consistent trainings and staff meetings to equip and support staff. During COVID Freedom Scholars used nimble thinking and actions to create “Equity Learning Pods” where scholars received their remote learning along with tutoring at the Freedom Scholars Learning Center.

Freedom Scholars Learning Center is joyfully dedicated to the student scholars and families they serve. A strong partnership exists with John James Audubon School No. 33 in Rochester, New York. While reading and literacy are key skills being taught, conflict resolution, social engagement are consistently taught and reinforced. Jeremy spoke of one social engagement activity where a scholar created amazing posters to remind student scholars how beautiful they are. Family to Family podcast on YouTube provides parents and guardians the ability to learn from one another while celebrating the expertise of these valued stakeholders. Jeremy’s love and dedication as Executive Director. He is “not new to this – he is true to this.”
