One of my most favorite, beloved quote is by Mr. Fred Rogers.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
The definition of a helper is pretty straightforward. It is someone who helps someone else. There are significant problems and issues the world is facing. The coronavirus, the killings of black people, lack of jobs, healthcare disparities, climate change, discrimination against people because of race, gender, religion, LGBTQ, poverty, drug abuse, violence, inequality are just a few of them. What is going on is serious and significant. People are hurting on every level. There are raw wounds of pain and suffering in so many people for so many traumatic, horrific reasons.
You know what else is going on during these dark, challenging moments? Helpers from all walks of life are showing up everywhere to help in whatever way they can. Individuals are helping not because they have to, not because there is any financial gain or notoriety. Individuals, groups of people, are showing up because they care, because they see the hurt around them. These helpers are healing wounds around them with love, kindness, and compassion.
I believe with every fiber of my being that the majority of humans are humane, kind, caring individuals who want to do the right thing. I believe, with every fiber of my being, that the majority of humans have love, compassion, and kindness residing in their spirits and souls. Are people perfect. Not at all. Are most of us trying. Absofreakinglutely.
There are a plethora of research that shows that helping others has a strong correlation with helping us be happier. Helping others can counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. It is all win, win, win. I know on a personal level when I am feeling down, sad, and my energy is low when I go and do something kind for someone else I feel better. It is automatically boosts my mood to a happier. It truly is the easiest action I have ever taken to feel better about myself. I also like to feel that I am putting good energy, love, and compassion into a world where people desperately need it. Every day I make a choice to search out and read stories about the kind deeds and good news going on in the world. I read stories of so many helpers doing so much good for our world. It fuels my hope for the world I live in as there is so many acts of good and kindness that occurs everyday and everywhere. These stories about the helpers inspire and motivate me to do more good for others.
“Kindness is a wonderful way to let another struggling soul know that there is still love in this world.” Author unknown
Most remarkable person you are a special, beautiful gift with intelligence and talents no one else has. Take great care of who you are. Shower yourself with kindness and compassion. As Pema Chödron says “Be kinder to yourself. And then let your kindness flood the world”. There is a helper inside of every one of us. If you are already doing your helper thing and helping others woohoo! For anyone else I say try it, because I know you will like it❤️ I am a dreamer like John Lennon. I do imagine and believe that if we all unleash our kindnesses, living in the world as helpers and let our actions of helping others flood the world that “the world will be as one”.
May your helper be with you💜
